Black and White Surfaces (2017)
Artist statement
This is a work created for, and inspired by the conceptual framework proposed in, Empathic Park—an art exchange project initiated by a group of MFA students from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China. Focusing on the notions of transposition and empathy, together they suggest a point of departure for further exchange of ideas and creations. Being empathic, in general terms, is to relate oneself to another at various circumstances. The shift in perception involved—the process for gaining awareness and an alternative understanding—is what I’ve found particularly intriguing. This conceptual work is my artistic response to the broader notions of transposition and empathy than the project might have initially proposed. In order to leave room for your own interpretation, I’d stay away from any further explanation in the hope that the work will stand on its own and speak for itself.
